Brazilian Serie A Final Standing Analysis

The Brazilian Serie A is over for another season following a thrilling campaign that contained plenty of drama.

Reading on, you’ll be able to find out all the critical issues regarding the final table and what it means moving forward for the clubs of Brazil.

Champions and Runners-Up – Reflecting on the Top Performers

Palmeiras are this season’s champions and it’s thanks to their home form that brought them the crown.

Across the season, Palmeiras only dropped points on five occasions when welcoming challengers to the Allianz Parque and that was a vital factor in allowing them to win the title for a twelfth time and a second consecutive title.

With Gremio taking second spot, Palmeiras’ 4-1 win over their closes rival earlier in the season was perhaps their most important result.

Their draw on the final day against Cruzeiro, a game that finished 1-1, was all that was needed for Palmeiras to get over the line leading to wild celebrations.

Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana Qualifiers – Recognising Continental Achievements

As champions of Brazil, Palmeiras move into next year’s Copa Libertadores group stage, and they would usually be joined by the team who finish in positions 1-5.

As Fluminense won this year’s Copa Libertadores, they will take a position meaning that fifth place Botafogo will enter at the second stage of the competition.

Sao Paulo will also be in next year’s competition as a reward for winning the Copa do Brazil.

The eight teams entering the Copa Libertadores are

  • Palmeiras
  • Gremio
  • Atletico Mineiro
  • Flamengo
  • Botafogo
  • Red Bull Bragantino
  • Fluminense
  • Sao Paulo

Further down the table, continental honours will also be up for grabs next season via the Copa Sudamericana.

The six qualified teams for that competition are

  • Athletico Paranaense
  • Internacional
  • Fortaleza
  • Cuiabá
  • Corinthians
  • Cruzeiro

Continental glory is vital for the legacy of all Brazilian teams and is considered the ultimate proving ground in South American football. All qualified teams will be going all out to obtain glory.

Relegation Outcome – Teams Facing the Drop

One of the biggest shocks that took place during the season was the relegation of Santos. Pele’s former club will not play top flight football next season following a disastrous season that never got off the ground.

As well as Santos, those playing in Serie B next year will be Goias, Coritiba, and America Mineiro. Thise replacing them in leading division will be Vitoria, Juventude, Criciuma, and Atlético Goianiense.

In-Depth Interval Analysis – Retrospective Statistical Breakdown

As well as winning the league, Palmeiras also had the best goal difference with their +31 considerably better than Botafogo’s which was in second place with +21.

Palmeiras also scored the most goals with 64 but they were pushed close on that record by Gremio who finished the season with 63.

Atletico Mineiro finished in third place and that was largely thanks to their defence which only conceded 32 goals. They had to share that record with Cruzeiro who finished in 14th place.

The league’s top scorer was Paulinho for Atletico Mineiro with 20 goals, but he was pushed hard by Luis Suarez with the Uruguayan slotting 17 times for Gremio.
