Italian Supercup 2023: AC Milan vs Inter

The EA 2023 Supercoppa Italiana or EA Sports Supercup pits together last season’s Serie A winners and the 2021-2022 Coppa Italia winners.

Italian Supercup 2023: AC Milan v Inter

AC Milan and Inter both only lost four matches last season, an impressive feat from both sides, but it was AC Milan that took the Serie A title by just two points.

Inter scored the most goals in the Serie A last season, but Milan’s stubborn defense saw them concede less than a goal a game on average. Their blend of youth and experience was the perfect tonic for the season and the title celebrations were wild too!

Yes, it was that close, and we’re excited about the Supercoppa as the rivalry intensifies in the heat of the Saudi dunes.

While Napoli are taking charge this season, a chance to begin 2023 with a trophy is an amazing opportunity for both sides who are slightly off the pace this season.

What is the Italian Supercup

The Italian Supercup is quite a simple concept: get the Coppa Italia winners to challenge the Serie A winners to see which is the better team. It’s the icing on the cake for the winners, and when two city rivals are thrown together, bragging rights are also at stake.

This is one of the fiercest rivalries in Europe, and we’re blessed to see two great sides go head to head competing for a trophy once more.

When is the Italian Supercup?

Kick-off is on the 18th of January 2023 at 20:00 CET with Serie A champions AC Milan labeled as the home side.

Where will it be played?

This year will be another international edition of the Supercup as both sets of teams jet off to Saudi Arabia to compete in the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. The stadium’s capacity is 25,000 and was opened in 2015 as Saudi Arabia looks to continue to develop the beautiful game in that region.

The venue has often changed over the last few years, with the final being held twice in the USA, four times in China, twice in Doha, Qatar, twice in Saudi Arabia, and once in Libya. Rome’s Stadio Olimpico has hosted the final twice as a neutral venue, and the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia has also hosted the final once.

Traditionally, the home of the Serie A winners was used, with 24 finals held on home turf.

Inter won Italian Cup

Defending Serie A champions Inter took the league by storm the season before and this side was not finished with their dominance yet.

44 teams contested the Coppa Italia, from across the top three divisions. Inter joined the competition in the Round of 16 phase, and got off to a 3-2 win over Empoli, in a victory that was secured in Extra Time. They then brushed Roma aside in the quarters and met AC Milan, of all teams, in the Semi-Final.

This was a hugely anticipated fixture, but as Milan focused on the Serie A, Inter went full tilt and smashed three past their rivals to reach the Coppa Italia final.

Waiting in the wings were Juventus, Italy’s most successful club and the final was a treat.

2-2 at Full Time, two goals in Extra Time saw Inter clinch their eighth Coppa Italia, bagging the right to wear the coveted badge on their kits for the following season.

AC Milan won Serie A

AC Milan were not title favorites by any stretch of the imagination before last season began but when they embarked on a 12-match unbeaten streak, it was clear: the Rossoneri were back where they belong.

Their first defeat came at the end of November when Fiorentina beat them in a 4-3 thriller and this was followed by another defeat, this time at home to Sassuolo as the team wobbled.

But, as good teams do, they picked themselves up and went on a three-game unbeaten streak till defeat to Napoli came. The points gap they developed due to their fantastic start came in handy as they still maintained control over the division despite the defeats.

January saw a shock loss to Spezia, once again at the San Siro, but this was the last time the side succumbed to defeat for the entire duration of the season. They owed it to their experienced players who kept a cool head under tough circumstances with Inter hot on their heels.

The title was wrapped up in style as Milan went on a red-hot six-match winning streak, climaxing with a 3-0 win at Sassuolo with the title in hand. Let the celebrations begin!
