Portugal’s March International Fixtures

Portugal knows what it takes to win the European Championships after taking the crown in 2016 but can they do it again with Roberto Martinez at the helm?

With Cristiano Ronaldo still their main man, Portugal will be hopeful their footballing hero can once again fire them to glory.

Here, we look at what their March plans are as they get ready for summer.

Portugal’s March International Fixtures

Portugal will stay in Europe for their March fixture as they play familiar opponents as they get ready for numerous European tests this summer.

First up for Portugal is a game against Sweden and then they will make the trip to Slovenia as Martinez looks to decide on his best team.

  • Thursday March 21 – Portugal vs. Sweden – 19:45
  • Tuesday March 26 – Slovenia vs. Portugal – 19:45

Rivals Analysis

In Sweden and Slovenia, Portugal have selected two teams they know well and that will also help them prepare for the tactics they may face at Euro 2024.

Sweden have failed to qualify for Euro 2024 but they have a new manager in Jon Dahl Tomasson and the former Blackburn Rovers manager will want to make an immediate impression.

In Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden have one of the most impressive strikers in Europe following an impressive season and there’s also Alexander Isak who has been fine up front for Newcastle United.

Slovenia will look to Andraž Šporar to score their goals as they aim to score an unlikely win over Portugal.

Squad Selection and Player Analysis

It’s an exciting time to be a Portugal fan as they get to see their combination of youth and experience try and deliver on the big stage.

Pepe and Ronaldo, teammates for club and country throughout their careers will still have a big part to play if Portugal are to succeed.

In Joao Neves, Portugal have one of the most exciting young talents in Europe and the Benfica midfielder alongside Bernardo Silva could be a creative spark for Portugal.

Up top, Ronaldo’s presence will be a factor, but he’ll also be backed by proven quality such as Diogo Jota and Joao Felix.

Tactical Preview

Roberto Martinez has always been a possession based manager and that won’t change when the Euros get underway.

Neves has been superb for Benfica and if Portugal are to control the ball then the youngster will be a vital part of Martinez’ plans.

It’s widely speculated that Martinez knows the bulk of his team and how it will look for the Euros so these two games against Sweden and Slovenia will be used to perfect their strategy.

Can anyone force their way into the plans of Martinez ahead of the Euros? These two fixtures will tell us.

Matches Preparations

Portugal will be major threats at this summer’s tournament and these March fixtures can help Roberto Martinez decide on his best 11 whilst also providing his side with a big confidence going into the competition.

Portugal are a fabulous side to watch when it all clicks, and Martinez has trusted a certain number of players in his reign so far.

These fixtures could be the last chance for players to impress the Spanish manager but will that be enough to force their way into the starting line-up.
